What a glacier landing in Juneau is really like

Juneau helicopter tours begin on the ground. A van collects you at the cruise terminal or a hotel near the airport and takes about 15 minutes to reach Juneau International Airport, where a safety briefing of about 45 minutes comes before anyone goes near a helicopter. By the time you walk out to the pad you know where the belts, the doors and the headsets are.

Then it happens fast. The helicopter lifts off, the airport shrinks, and within about 15 minutes you have crossed the Tongass National Forest and the first ridges to reach Herbert Glacier. A glacier landing in Juneau is a gentle thing: the skids settle on the ice, the rotor slows, and your pilot opens the door onto a white and blue world.

You have about 25 minutes on the ice for photos and a guided walk, with the pilot as your guide, before the flight back and the van to your drop-off point. The whole outing takes 2.5 hours and starts from $429, which is the price of standing, briefly, on a river of ice that began high on the icefield.

By the way · the icefield

A sea of ice right behind the town

The Juneau Icefield is the reason these flights exist. It lies 2,000 feet above downtown, covers 1,500 square miles and is the fifth largest icefield in North America. From Taku Inlet it stretches to Skagway, feeding 38 major glaciers, the Mendenhall among them.

There is no road onto it. Travel Juneau says you have to fly to get to the icefield, unless you set out on foot. NASA once chose it as one of the places on Earth that captured the sensations of walking on the moon. Stand on a glacier below it for a few minutes and the comparison makes sense: rock, ice, sky and very little else.

The ice is also changing. Between 2005 and 2019 10% of the icefield's ice melted away and 63 of 1,050 glaciers disappeared, according to NASA. A flight today shows you a landscape in motion, and the bare rock along the valley walls is the record of where the glaciers used to reach.

By the way · what guests say

What past guests remember most

Read through reviews of Juneau helicopter tours like this one and the pilots come up again and again. Guests name them, thank them for the commentary on the way up and for warning everyone before a view came into sight, and several say the pilot or guide made them feel safe from start to finish.

The landing itself is the other theme. Guests describe a smooth touchdown on the glacier, the views of the mountains on the flight, and the chance to drink glacier water straight from the meltwater streams and fill a bottle to take home. One guest describes the team helping her mother, a wheelchair user, on board with a lifting chair.

The scores reflect that. The tour is rated 4.90 from 49 reviews on GetYourGuide. Not every review describes the same weather or the same patch of ice, but the pattern is consistent: a well-run outing with a pilot who makes the short time on the glacier count.

By the way · the season

Summer is glacier season

Flights onto the ice are a summer business. When the Forest Service reviewed the icefield tours, it expected most of the use between May and September each year. Those are also the months of long days: mid-June in Juneau has 18.2 hours of daylight.

The summer is mild rather than warm. The average daily high downtown reaches 17.4 °C in July, and the glacier is colder than the dock. NorthStar tells its guests to expect a drop of 10-15°F between the cruise docks and the ice. A warm layer is part of the kit even on the sunniest day in town.

Late summer brings more rain. Downtown averages 9 days with at least 2.5 mm of rain in June and 20 in September. If you have a choice of dates, early summer brings fewer rainy days, but any day in the season can bring a window in the cloud.

By the way · weather calls

Cloud, flat light and the go or no-go

Rain alone rarely stops a flight here. Coastal Helicopters, which runs this tour, says many of its tours fly in the rain. What grounds helicopters is low cloud and poor light over the snow, and those can change within the hour.

The FAA calls flat light an optical illusion that usually comes with overcast skies and can hide the shape of the terrain completely. In those conditions a pilot may be able to leave a site but not return to it, and flying is not recommended in any whiteout. A cancelled flight on a gray morning is the system doing its job.

Plan for it. Book an early slot so a delay still leaves time, keep the rest of the day flexible, and have a ground plan ready. Coastal Helicopters notes that in rare cases weather can even hold passengers on the glacier for a while, one more reason for a generous margin before your ship sails.

Book your seat

Herbert Glacier is waiting for you.

Pick your date, give your weights and cancel at no cost up to 3 days before.

By the way · the terms

Weights, seats and cancelling

Helicopters fly to weight limits, so the booking asks for each guest's name and accurate dressed weight. Passengers from 118 kg to 136 kg book a Plus Seat for an extra $150, and from 137 kg a Premium seat reserves a second seat. Each departure carries up to 12 guests, depending on availability and weight balance.

Federal rules back this up. Before each commercial helicopter tour the operator must complete a performance plan that includes weight limits, and every passenger must be briefed before take-off. Honest weights at booking spare you a surprise at the base.

The tour allows free cancellation up to 3 days in advance. That is earlier than the 24 hours on, for example, the city bus tour, so book once your plans are settled. Pickup from the cruise ship terminal or hotels near the airport is included, while food, drinks and the gratuity are not.

Getting the shot from the air and on the ice

In the air, keep your camera or phone on a strap, turn off the flash, and shoot through the glass at an angle to cut reflections. Frame a little of the window or the skid in some shots: it tells the viewer you were up there. Short bursts work better than video when the helicopter turns, and you will have both hands free for the moment the glacier fills the window.

On the ice, the light is bright even under cloud. Underexpose a little so the snow does not burn out, and look for the blue: Travel Juneau notes that glacier ice shows its most intense blue in crevasses and where it breaks off. A person in the frame gives the scale that ice alone never does.

Bring nothing that needs a bag. The tour does not allow bags, backpacks, drones, selfie sticks or tripods, so travel light with one camera and a spare battery in a pocket. And give yourself a minute without a screen: the quiet on a glacier after the rotor stops is worth hearing.

2,000feet

Right above the town

The Juneau Icefield lies 2,000 feet above downtown.

It covers 1,500 square miles and ranks as the fifth largest icefield in North America, and you can reach it only by flying or on foot.

By the way · what to wear

Dress for a colder world up there

The listing asks you to bring comfortable shoes, warm clothing and clothes suited to the day's weather. High heels, sandals and open-toed shoes are not allowed, and on a glacier you will be glad of a sole with grip.

Layers work best. Start with something warm next to the skin, add a fleece or sweater and top it with a shell against wind and rain. Gloves and a hat earn their place even in July, when the average high downtown is 17.4 °C and the ice is colder.

Sunglasses are worth packing too. The glare off snow and ice is strong even on an overcast day, and squinting through your 25 minutes on the glacier wastes them. Leave umbrellas behind; they are not allowed on the tour.

By the way · dogs on the ice

Adding a dog camp to the flight

If you want more than a walk, other flights from the same airport add a summer dog camp on Herbert Glacier. The Juneau Dog Sledding and Helicopter Tour takes 3 hours in all and starts from $709. You spend about 1 hour at the camp, including a ride behind a racing dog team.

The longer version adds a second landing lower on the glacier for a guided walkabout among moulins, crevasses and ice falls. It takes 3.5 hours, starts from $839 and is limited to 6 guests.

If the glacier is the goal and the dogs are a bonus, the plain landing gives you the ice for less. If the dogs are the dream, the camp turns a flight into a half day on the icefield. Either way the flight in and out crosses the same forest and the same ridges.

By the way · without a helicopter

Seeing the Mendenhall from the ground

Not every day suits a flight, and not every budget does. The Mendenhall Glacier lies 13 miles from downtown and a few minutes from the airport, and you can reach its visitor center by road. A short trail, Photo Point Trail, ends at a lookout platform facing the glacier.

The Mendenhall is 12 miles long, running from the icefield to Mendenhall Lake, and at its widest more than half a mile across. It has been retreating since the mid-1700s, and NASA's images show it pulling back about a mile between 1986 and 2024.

Travel Juneau notes that glacier viewing is often best on overcast days, which makes the visitor center a good plan B when cloud keeps the helicopters on the ground. The visitor center and nearby trails, including Nugget Falls Trail, are open.

By the way · honest caveats

Who this flight suits, and who should wait

This flight suits anyone who wants to stand on a glacier without a long hike, on a schedule that fits a port day. It suits families, first-time flyers who want a short flight, and travelers who like booking online with free cancellation up to 3 days ahead. It is listed as wheelchair accessible; ask about boarding when you book.

It suits less well if you want hours on the ice. The stop is about 25 minutes; NorthStar's trek, booked directly, gives 2 hours on the Mendenhall or another glacier. It is also not a Mendenhall landing: TEMSCO and NorthStar land on the Mendenhall itself, while this tour lands on Herbert Glacier.

And it depends on the weather in a way a bus tour never does. If your only day in Juneau is forecast gray, keep the booking flexible and a ground plan ready. When it flies, though, it packs a rainforest, an icefield and a glacier under your boots into a single morning or afternoon.
